A local Audlem resident has asked if we could publish this information:
Quakers – Nothing to do with Porridge Oats! "That's just American marketing" but the common name for The Religious Society of Friends (www.quaker.org.uk).
They emerged from the turmoil and upheaval of the English Civil War period when "seekers after truth" left the Church of England and set out without any clergy leaders. They were established in Nantwich and district by about 1690.
They now meet at Bradfield Road Methodist Church in Crewe, at 3.00 pm on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, for an hour's prayerful meditation.
Nantwich Theatre, off Pillory Street, was first built as a Quaker Meeting House in the early 1700's, and continued there until about 1922. There were a number of Quaker farmers in the district, and such business people as Messrs Stretch and Harlock were prominent in the town.
What do Quakers say?
Their commitments are to Peace, Equality, Simplicity, Truth.
All are free to attend, and you will be welcome.
