The New Prime Minister
A week is a long time in politics as the Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson once dryly observed, and last week was no exception. I was saddened to hear of David Cameron's departure from Number 10 at such short notice.
I believe that over the last six years David has done an excellent job and he has stabilised the country whilst drastically reduced the deficit. I am extremely pleased that Britain has its second ever female Prime Minister in Theresa May, and I am sure that she will do an excellent job.
Tarpoley Carnival
Constituents and tourists alike enjoyed a great day out at the Tarporley Carnival. The parade passed through Tarporley High Street, passing The Swan where the judging of the floats and displays took place. I would like to congratulate everybody who took part for making it such an enjoyable day.
New £5 Note
I was delighted to attend a reception celebrating the launch of the new polymer 'fiver'. The new Bank of England £5 note features Winston Churchill and is made of polymer, a thin, flexible plastic. The New Fiver will begin making its way into cash machines and shop tills from 13 September.
Cotton paper £5 notes will be gradually withdrawn once the New Fiver enters circulation and will cease to be legal tender in May 2017, up until then everyone can carry on spending paper £5 notes as usual.
GHA Coaches
I am extremely concerned about GHA Coaches, who recently went into administration. Many of their employees who are based in the Winsford and Tarvin branches are now facing redundancy. I raised the issue in the chamber with Chris Grayling, then leader of the House of Commons last Thursday and I hope that an adequate resolution can be reached.
St Joseph's Catholic Primary School
I enjoyed my visit to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Winsford, where I met with pupils who were members of the school council. We discussed current affairs, the role of members of Parliament in their constituencies as well as the aspirations -- academic or otherwise -- of the young students.
Work Experience
Gregory Turnbull, a young constituent of mine who is passionate about politics, joined my staff and I in my Westminster office this week. Gregory attended Bishop Heber High School where he first developed his interest the British political system. Gregory thoroughly enjoyed his week's work experience and we wish him all the best for the future.
Rotary Charity Scooter Rally
I attended the Rotary Charity Scooter Rally at Blakemere Craft Centre, which was a wonderful day out for children and adults alike. Despite the poor weather conditions, there was an excellent turnout and everybody enjoyed examining these restored historic vehicles.
