While rural communities across the land keep fingers crossed that the foot and mouth outbreak is under control, Cheshire food lovers and farmers are getting together to combat the ever present threat of fast food and the supermarkets and have formed 'Slow Food Cheshire.'
The Slow Food movement began in Italy twenty years ago in the town of Bra when a local journalist reacted with horror at the news that Macdonalds had opened up next to the Spanish Steps in Rome. It is now a global organization which is united in its love of fine quality local and regional cuisine and has its UK base in Ludlow, Shropshire, a town that has become the 'foodie' capital of England.
Geoffrey Carr of Slow Food Cheshire says: "Cheshire has some of the finest pasture in Britain and can produce the very best of meat and dairy products. Our new Slow Food group will support good local producers of food and drink and encourage new ones."
A series of events is being planned including tastings of farmhouse cheeses; micro-brewery beers; bread; butter; apple juice and pickles, all produced within Cheshire. Anyone who is interested in further information should contact Peter Harris of Slow Food Cheshire on 01606 334942.
