Historic boats draw crowds to Audlem Wharf

Hundreds of visitors flocked to Audlem Wharf as the popular Gathering of Historic Boats returned to the Shropshire Union Canal.

The free three-day event, held from Friday 24th July to Sunday 26th July 2026, showcased more than 25 beautifully preserved historic narrow boats, celebrating Britain's rich canal heritage and attracting visitors from across the region.

Organised by the Historic Narrow Boat Club, the annual gathering highlighted the important role the nation's inland waterways once played in transporting goods around the country. Founded in 1966, the not-for-profit organisation is dedicated to preserving historic working boats and keeping alive the stories of the waterways and the people who worked on them.

The impressive fleet featured vessels dating from the early 1900s through to the present day. Many of the boats were once working craft that carried up to 25 tonnes of cargo along Britain's canals before the expansion of the railway network transformed freight transport.

Measuring around 70 feet long and seven feet wide, the traditional narrow boats were originally hauled by horses and mules before later being powered by steam and diesel engines.

Away from the water, visitors enjoyed refreshments at The Shroppie Fly overlooking the canal, while nearby Audlem Mill opened its doors to display artwork created by talented local schoolchildren across two floors. Visitors were also invited to vote for their favourite pieces.

Throughout the weekend, the volunteer-run Audlem Lass boat service offered leisurely cruises between Lock 15 and Overwater Marina. The popular trips not only gave passengers the chance to experience the historic canal from the water but also raised valuable funds for the RNLI.
