Tuesday 2nd November – the day voters in the USA went to the polls in the mid term elections. As the new power balance in Washington was being determined, voters in Burleydam WI were exercising their democratic right to choose their President for the next year.

It is true WI Presidents don't have a finger on the nuclear button. "Thank goodness for that!", I hear you cry! They do, however, play a crucial leadership role in determining the direction of their Institutes into the 21st century whilst upholding the values and traditions of the WI movement.

Sarah Lunt was first elected President in 2005 and, after five years during which the membership has increased and new activities have started, she has decided to stand down. Sarah will remain on the committee for 2010/11 and two new members have joined, Karen Gee and Margaret Hollins.

Carolyn Wilde has decided to take a break from the committee for this year. Members could nominate anyone from the new committee to be President. In the event, Elaine Walton was elected unopposed.

The words "tea party" have taken on a different connotation in the political life of the United States. In Burleydam they still signify a decent cup of tea and homemade cakes.

Members had plenty of time to enjoy both, courtesy of bakers, Jean Cornes and Liz Gentil, as the gremlins had got into the computer putting Carolyn Wilde's anticipated film show "More Travels with a Camera" in jeopardy.

Fortunately, technical expert, John Wilde, saved the day and the show went on. John was also on hand to judge the competition for an antique camera which was won by Jean Cornes, second, Ann Rutter and third, Sarah Lunt. Elaine Walton won the trophy for the most points over the year in the competitions.
