All our members, volunteers and staff in Audlem & District Community Action are really excited about the move of our Tuesday Club into the new Public Hall Annexe. We have worked hard over the last few years with our colleagues on the APHaX committee to achieve what is an excellent facility for all ages. We are grateful to the whole local community for the time, money and commitment that everyone has made

We are looking forward to using the new Annexe for an increased range of activities for our members which will also enable us to undertake more shared activities with other groups. We have veteran table football and table tennis players in our midst – so watch out the Youth Club. We also have plans for playing football, but of the indoor, walking variety. We are also planning to organise gentle keep fit sessions in the new Annexe for the not-so-fit amongst us which we are assured will be fun.

When Thornton House closed in 2013, we had to find new accommodation. With the support of the local community we were able to join in with APHaX to help achieve the building of the new Annexe and also to move the Tuesday Club to Hankelow Chapel which has now been fully refurbished by the Methodist Church.

Moving In to the Annexe

Please come and see us in the new Thornton Lounge at the grand opening on Saturday, 18th November at 2pm onwards. The naming of the new lounge is to mark the continuation of the services previously provided at Thornton House and to continue to recognise the long standing contribution made to our community by the Thornton family.

We will be moving our Tuesday Club into the new Annexe Lounge during November from its present home at Hankelow Chapel. The Tuesday Club caters for up to 20 older people each week and provides a range of social activities, support and regular musical events as well as a freshly cooked midday meal. If you would like to attend or have a relative or friend who might be interested, please contact Tracey Humphries on 07845 495973.

When Thornton House was closed in 2013, we had to look for a new home. We have been very fortunate to now have not only the new Annexe facilities to use but also to be able to continue to use the refurbished Community Hall at Hankelow Chapel.

Keeping a Club at Hankelow

We have been fortunate in having obtained additional funding to continue to run a weekly club in Hankelow's Community Hall in partnership with the Methodist Chapel. The Wednesday 'Crunch and Brunch' weekly get-to-gether will start on 6th December 2017. It is for everyone to drop in between 11am and 3pm for coffee, chat, a light lunch and activity of people's choosing. So please come along.

About ADCA

ADCA was established in 2011 as a Charitable Trust to take over the Thornton House Day Club and now supports nearly 100 older people and 53 carers. Our aims are to help people:

  • be socially active and to meet others locally
  • keep their independence
  • maintain and improve health and well being
  • who are carers to have support and a break from caring
  • to access local health services

Our 10 Trustees and 40 volunteers work alongside our 2 staff in providing all our services. We are always looking for more volunteers to join us, whether it be in helping at one of our clubs or in our befriending service, becoming a voluntary driver or helping with operating the Medical Transport Scheme. More information will be available at the Grand Opening or ring our office number 01270 747163 to enquire.

Beside the Tuesday Club, we also run the Friday Coffee Club which meets at the Lord Combermere in Audlem Square every week between 10am and 12 noon for friendship, chat, news and updates with speakers on topic of local interest. Everyone is welcome to drop in for coffee and a chat.

Our small but growing befriending service provides individual support to people who are either housebound or who cannot easily join in social events. We match individual volunteers to provide regular visiting support and friendship including to carers who are looking after a family member.

Our Medical Transport Service is run by volunteers and provides voluntary drivers to take people who have difficulties getting to Hospital, Clinic and GP appointments. Currently approximately 12 trips are arranged each month.

The Carer's Support Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday each month between 10am and 12 noon coffee and chat and to get advice from visiting speakers. We are now in touch with over 50 carers through this service, many of whom are over 60 years of age looking after spouses or aged parent. We also organise Carers Breaks activity including trips to local facilities including bowling, bread making, floristry and lunches out.

Funding ADCA

We continue to receive the vital support of the many organisations and individuals who provide our funding. We provide many of our services under contract with Cheshire East Council from their Early Intervention and Prevention programme and also from the NHS who fund our Carers Service. We also are helped enormously by local groups who fund us including the Audlem Charity Shop and Audlem Quiz Night who help fund our Medical Transport and Carers Services.

This year we have also received funding via the Public Health 'Participatory Budgets' money and from Cheshire Community Federation towards helping expand the range of activities within our clubs. Our members, volunteers and staff also undertake a variety of fund raising events including our 20 week draw and stalls at local village fetes. We also receive vital, unstinting support from local businesses including Alan and Jo Brown at the Lord Combermere, Graham Tressider for the use of his office and Andrew Bradshaw for help with the accounts. Thanks are due to everyone who continue to help ADCA in anyway.
