A local resident consulted a bird expert who replied
"The bird is a female mandarin duck, they are breeding all over Cheshire. I've had four pairs in owl boxes this year, with as many as nine chicks leaving one nest."
Hopefully that settles the mystery but if you have a contrary view, do let us know.
Indeed, Derek Mckelvey adds: "Regards the overwater bird, a few years ago we had the twitchers twitching above Lock 12; it turned out to be cross between a Mandarin and a Mallard!"
