Regular readers will recall the story published on AudlemOnline on Christmas Eve, 'An Uplifting Tale of Heroism' which we repeated a month later.

It tells the remarkable story of a British soldier, George Dickinson, in the Great War a hundred years ago who, badly wounded, was rescued by a German soldier who carried him to a British field hospital and saved his life. After the war, the two soldiers kept in touch.

The story was told brilliantly by Audlem resident, Peter Oxley, grandson of the rescued British soldier, and illustrated with his grandfather's diary and photographs.

Via AudlemOnline, Peter was last month contacted by a Stockport museum, who wanted to use this unusual story of heroism and co-operation between so-called enemies in an exhibition later this year.

Events have now moved on and Peter Oxley brings us up to date:

"I went to meet Joanne Dunn at the Stockport Story Museum on Thursday and was able to take my Auntie Margaret (last surviving Daughter of George Dickinson) and took with us his war diary (see photo), war medals and many photos, maps and other documents relating to his story.

"The museum is planning a whole floor to be dedicated to experiences of local people (civilians and soldiers) who experienced the suffering and hardhips of 'The War to End All Wars'.

"We have been asked to do some interviews and recordings for several audio-visual presentations for the public, to be accompanied by images and video from the era.

"The museum were especially delighted by input from my Auntie about her feelings about difficult subjects like her discomfort with seeing my Grandad's severe War-wound scars on his arm and legs from his horrific injuries.

"We will be going back in April to record these contributions before the exhibition begins in November."
