The government has announced its support for Cheshire East Council's plans for a new bypass for Middlewich as part of the 'Large Local Major Schemes' programme.

The £58m scheme will provide a bypass around Middlewich town centre and enable access to the strategic employment site next to the M6. Completion of the bypass will support economic growth by enabling 1,160 new houses and between 2,150 and 6,500 new jobs in the town.

The bypass is a priority for the public and private sector and there is considerable developer interest in sites that will be better connected by the bypass.

Councillor Rachel Bailey, Cheshire East Council leader, said: "This council is committed to delivering the eastern bypass for Middlewich and has worked hard towards that aim since it took over responsibility for delivering it in 2015.

"This announcement is excellent news for the residents of Middlewich, who have been waiting for more than 20 years for a bypass which will relieve traffic congestion and open up major development opportunities in the town.

Funding for the scheme is being provided from the National Productivity Investment Fund and the Large Local Majors fund.
