1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire) will be parading through Crewe town centre tomorrow to mark the homecoming from their return of duty in Afghanistan.

The Crewe parade will take place on Friday, June 14 at 11.00am. The parade will start at Forge Street car park travelling towards Market Street before saluting the Mayor along Queensway. The regiment will then continue the parade along Market Street before turning on to Earle Street and finishing at The Municipal Buildings.

Councillor Dorothy Flude, Mayor of Cheshire East said: "This parade will prove to be a truly historic event. With this in mind, we must remember the significance of the Cheshire Regiment, as quoted in the "The Cookenden History of the Cheshire Regiment in the Great War 1914 to 1918":

"The Battalion behaved magnificently in the face of terrible odds and immense difficulties. One could not fault them; they did their duty, and did it well, as I should always have expected from such a gallant battalion and I am only too grieved that they had such frightful losses." This quote comes from their Brigadier General after the battle of Mons 1914 .

This statement is as true today as it was in 1914. 1st Mercian has just returned from active service on the frontline in war-torn Helmand Province. The regiment- whose motto is 'Stand firm, strike hard'- suffered one fatality during its six-month tour of duty.
