Following the very sad news of Berni Cliffe's death on Wednesday morning, comes news that the Mend our Mum campaign has been nominated for an award tonight in Chester at the Crowne Plaza hotel.
The Chronicle said in its coverage this week:
South Cheshire Team of the Year category, Mend our Mum Campaign, Audlem:
An inspiring version of Amazing Grace which was posted on YouTube took the nation by storm receiving thousands of hits and put the South Cheshire campaign to Mend our Mum on the international map.
When mum Berni Cliffe's family learned she had developed incurable cancer, her devastated daughters Hannah and Terri set about finding out ways of getting the very best treatment. The best was available in America but would cost a staggering £100,000. Not deterred the family quickly set about fund raising and campaigning to achieve the target amount.
The family set up a website www.mendourmum.co.uk and the campaign culminated in the wonderful gospel song Amazing Grace which the whole village of Audlem participated in.
The song became a YouTube sensation and not only shot up the music charts but received international media attention.
Sadly, the last part of the Chronicle's story has been overtaken by events this week after the Chronicle went to press but this is the second recognition in Chester since Berni's death. Last night, Terri and Hannah, with Ralph Warburton, were on stage at the O2 Media Awards night at Chester Race Course and the Amazing Grace video was shown to the assemble media representatives – see separate story. Berni, we are told, had asked her daughters to attend.
You can click on the video to relive the village's efforts last December and the wonderful filming and editing by the Audlem Music Festival team. Allow about 10 seconds for the introductory copy to fade away and then young Macy starts to sing.
