Green Lane, the A529 road to Market Drayton, has been closed much of the day following a serious incident.

West Mercia police have issued an appeal after a man's body was found beside the road after what police believe was a non-stop collision.

The man, believed to be aged 19, was found on the verge of the A529 between Adderley and Market Drayton.

It's believed he may have been struck by a vehicle while walking home in the dark. Police have now closed the road and have issued an appeal for witnesses.

The body was spotted at around 8.30am today and the police alerted. It's thought the man was making his way home to Market Drayton along the A529, having set off at around 4.45pm yesterday.

Chief Inspector Paul Moxley said: "An investigation has been launched into the circumstances behind this tragedy.

"It appears he has been walking home in the dark when struck by a passing vehicle but until a post mortem has been held we cannot be sure of the exact circumstances.

"However, it is vital we seek information from anyone who saw a person walking along this road from Adderley towards Market Drayton from late yesterday afternoon, or through the night, up until 8.30am today when the body was discovered.

"This will help us narrow down the time when the incident happened. It is really important people call Market Drayton or Shrewsbury police stations on 101 without delay.

"We are anxious to trace the driver or any passengers in the vehicle involved – it's possible they may not even be aware of what happened although this is unlikely. If the driver or any passengers do think they were involved, I urge them to make contact as a matter or urgency. I would also ask anyone who did travel along this road to think back to consider the possibility of their vehicle being in contact with a pedestrian."

Police officers were continuing to work at the scene today. The Shropshire coroner Mr John Ellery has been informed.
