The 2nd XI finished the season in fine style when they defeated visitors Mossley by 8 wickets in a high-scoring match that included two centuries. Audlem's man of the match was Majid Ullah with two wickets, a run out and an unbeaten century.
Mossley, already condemned to relegation, won the toss and elected to bat first. Only two batsmen scored double figures but the visitors still accumulated 215 runs. Patrick Moss scored a fine 112 and he was ably supported by Barry Carney with 72. Lyndon Woodcock took 4 for 48, Roy Wild 1 for 48 and Maj Ullah 2 for 26. Youngster Ronan Farnell-Buckle bowled a respectable 0 for 29 off his eight overs.
Despite losing skipper Danny Thorburn for 2, Audlem cruised to victory with 15 overs to spare. Ullah hit a brilliant 117 not out including 10 sixes and 9 fours. John Wainwright, who was bowled two runs short of what would have been a deserved 50, hit 2 sixes and 7 fours. Paul Thorburn rounded things off with 7 fours in a quick-fire 30 not out as Audlem cruised to victory at 216 for 2.
The 25 points gained moved Audlem above Glazebury into fifth position in the final Division 4 table. This was due to a very successful second half of the season. When the team lost to Mossley half-way through the season, things looked grim as the side was rock-bottom. Ably led by young skipper Danny Thorburn, the whole team showed its true colours and only one match, to promoted Mellor 1st XI, was lost in July, August and September – including a stunning victory away to champions Port Sunlight.
