We return to the Clwydian Range for this walk. We start in Llangwyfan forest car park (no charge and no toilets unfortunately).
From the car park we climb steadily along the edge of the forest to reach the hilltop of Pen-y- Cloddiau, encircled by Iron Age earthworks. We follow the Offa’s Dyke path across open moors with good views on a clear day across the Vale of Clwyd, Denbigh moors and the peaks of Snowdonia in the distance. We descend briefly before a further there-and-back ascent to the trig point on Moel y Parc with views across to the Wirral and the Lancashire coast.
The route then heads back towards Llangwyfan forest on a level path, this time contouring Pen-y-Cloddiau. We’ll reach a point within a mile and a half of the car park (an opportunity for a short-cut if you’ve had enough) before continuing on a long, steady ascent towards the saddle between Moel Arthur and Moel Llys-y-coed. From here it’s a short climb up to the trig point on Moel Arthur followed by a short but fairly steep descent back to the car park.
A handful of dog-friendly stiles. There may be sheep on Pen-y-Cloddiau and Moel y Parc.
9.5 miles 4-5 hrs. Total ascent 524m/1719ft. Max elevation: 456m/1496ft.
