Local Children's Charity Appeal for Volunteers

SCANS (Summer holidays for Crewe And Nantwich School children) has been running since the 1960s.

The charity's main purpose is to take groups of underprivileged children from Crewe and Nantwich away for a one-week holiday that the children would not otherwise receive.

The children enjoy a break and their full-time carers receive some much needed respite. The children are taken to a purpose-built centre set in beautiful grounds in the English Countryside, where the SCANS volunteers cram as many activities into the week as possible.

The children are encouraged to socialise with other children through constructive play and team games and are taken on day trips to give them an enjoyable experience they will never forget.

Helpers wantedSCANS are looking for helpers on the holidays, which are running during the last week of July and the first week of August 2010. They especially need a volunteer (or couple of volunteers) willing to cook evening meals for approximately 20 kids and 10 adults during the first week of August.

No special culinary skills are needed, plus a large kitchen and all cooking equipment is provided. Alternatively if you'd like to volunteer generally you can help out supervising the children to make sure they have an enjoyable holiday or help drive one of the mini-buses on the day trips.

Volunteering on the holiday also counts towards national awards, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Queen's Scout Award. All volunteers on the holidays receive need a full CRB check, which can take several weeks to process, hence why they are appealing for volunteers now.

Donations of clothes, toys etcIf you cannot help on the actual holidays, SCANS are looking for donations of kids clothes including coats and pyjamas (ages 5-11), toys and craft materials (paper/pens/crayons). So if you have any unused toys or unwanted Christmas presents please do get in touch.
