The other day I was idly browsing a superbly illustrated National Geographic book called “Journey’s of a lifetime – 500 of the World’s Greatest Trips" – lots of wonderful ideas of how/where to spend your spare time (and lots of money)!

I got to the chapter entitled ‘Top 10 Canal Trips" and looked down the list:

  • Panama

  • New York State Canal

  • Baltic Sea Canal

  • Copenhagen

  • Amsterdam

  • Black Sea Canal

  • Gota Canal

  • Brandenburg

  • English Channel – Med (France)

  • THE SHROPSHIRE UNION CANAL

Intrigued (and somewhat amazed) I read the brief description:

"The northern half of the SUC meanders through a gently rolling landscape. South of Nantwich it travels in a nearly straight line through hills and across valleys via deep cuttings and magnificent bridges.

"The canal is a monument to the early days of the Industrial Revolution – the brightly painted narrow boats also seem to come from another era."

Shame it didn’t actually mention Audlem by name – but not bad!
