Little Owl seen

A keen bird watcher travelling to Audlem on Sunday spotted a Little Owl perched on a building between the village and Woore.

As it was the first one of this species, much the smallest of the British owls, he had seen this year, it must be considered an unusual bird in the area.

They can be found perched for lengthy periods on barn roofs or other outbuildings or possibly on a post, as in the photo. They are about the size of a starling.

Little owls are more often seen in daylight than other owls but, while Tawny Owls are often seen and heard locally, and Barn Owls can sometimes be seen flying at dusk and evening along roadside hedges, Little Owls are certainly less common in this area.
