At a very successful and well-attended quiz night on Tuesday at the Lord Combermere, over £250 was raised for ADCA (Audlem & District Community Action) funds.
ADCA would like to thank wholeheartedly Ralph Warburton for his efforts as quizmaster, Allan and Jo at the Lord Combermere and all those who came along for the fun of the quiz and who contributed generously to the ADCA cause.
The occasion was made even more notable by the first reading, by Jessie in person, of her new poem in praise of Lord Combermere himself.
STAPLETON COTTON THE LORD COMBERMERE
1ST VISCOUNT COMBERMERE
This man was colourful, gallant and brave
He lived his life to the full
Fearless under fire-
No matter how dire
He was a gentleman
Born the 2nd son of a Baronet.
1773 was the year of his birth
A very special year.
Educated at Westminster School.
Always fearless , flamboyant but fair.
He married three times
Each lady an aristocrat
In her own right.
6 children blessed his life
2 were lost in infancy-
Lost without a fight.
He was wounded, bloodied
But disheartened-never
He was fearless in danger.
To him danger was his life-
Always fearless , flamboyant but fair.
His life , it seems
Was a life worth living.
91 years he lived his dreams-
Maybe his phantoms! We just don't know.
A gentleman to revere
A man for all seasons in every way-
A man to admire
Always fearless, flamboyant but fair.
Now tonight we are here
Enjoying ourselves,
In a hostelry beyond compare
With a right royal name-
"THE LORD COMBERMERE".
