Sixteen local residents met last night and discussed a manifesto of issues that might be adopted as part of a sustainabilty programme in the area. The group is inspired by the Transition movement that is being established in communities across the country.

If you are interested, there's an opportunity to discuss these issues at the exhibition and showing of the film The Age of Stupid in the Scout & Guide Hall this Saturday 24th October from 2.00pm. The programme runs through the afternoon and evening.

Using an elegant and highly democratic voting process, those present agreed that five issues were of prime importance amongst the group –

  • Growing more food locally
  • Shopping locally
  • Micro--electricity generation
  • Energy Usage surveys and advice
  • Communicating the issues and raising awareness
Many other issues were discussed at the meeting which was expertly chaired by Chris Thornton. These including waste recycling, the 'school run', the problem of long-distance HGVs through the area and water conservation.

The group has grown rapidly since its first gathering a couple of months ago and included residents of Audlem, Buerton, Hankelow and Dodcott cum Wilkesley. Meetings will be held in future on the first Wednesday evening of the month. You can find out more on Saturday while arrangements are also being made for the group to publish a section on Audlem Online shortly.

It's free entry to the film showings on Saturday and every person calling in to the Scout & Guide Hall for the display or the film will have the chance to win a Smart Meter (worth £30) to monitor their energy consumption at home.
