History Society meeting – March 22nd 2013

For the obvious reasons of being so much connected to grief and loss, a talk about a cemetery would not at first appeal.

However, at the March meeting of the History Society, Ralph Warburton gave a most interesting and informative presentation which described the many little-known facets of this important place in the village – what, for instance lies behind 'UC' and 'C' in the Registers (Unconsecrated and Consecrated).

Audlem Cemetery dates back to 1885, and – thankfully – avoided incorporation into Local Authority control. Through careful planning, attention to detail and sensitivity to relatives, it has become one of the best-managed and attractive cemeteries in the area, and by no means the most expensive.

Interestingly the recently installed memorial to those formerly buried, including many children, in unmarked graves, is made of granite imported from India! Interspersed with witty asides, Mr Warburton gave us a very worthwhile insight into local history.
