AudlemOnline's stand-in temporary acting non-commissioned editors are mightily relieved to herald the return of the main man from his protracted stay in hospital. His convalescence is likely to be long and difficult at times but it is a great relief that he is taking up quill and ink (or more likely MAC and keyboard) again. And hopefully just in time to herald another record-breaking year of readership figures for the website.

AudlemOnline editor, Bob Cartwright, writes for the first time since early November:

After forty two long days and nights in Hospital, can there be a finer feeling than sliding into your own bed? However good the hospital care – and it was excellent – there's nothing quite like home.

I first came out of North Staffs just over a week ago but a return on Friday for some follow-up operations meant a doubt as to whether I would be home for Christmas. Fortunately I was out by Friday evening and able to see the quite remarkable sight again of a fully illuminated Audlem. The lights, beautifully co-ordinated, must bring pleasure to everyone passing through and every resident who ventures into the village each evening.

Amazingly, it's all achieved by volunteers, ADAS members and many others who lend their time, expertise and specialist equipment to ensure Audlem is the best dressed Festive village possible each year. What a community spirit!

So good too to see the progress underway on the Public Hall annexe. It was still all waiting to happen when I went into hospital, an idea from 2010 now brought to fruition by another team of volunteers working for years to raise the funds required.

My main reason for writing today is to thank Alvar Jones and John Tilling for all their hard work maintaining AudlemOnline in my absence – indeed in November they attracted more readers than I achieved In October. Thanks also to all the contributors who send in stories and news and make the website possible – and still growing.

Also, a personal thank you for all the visits, cards, messages and support for Helen over the past seven weeks. I am so grateful.

My apologies that Christmas cards have been a casualty of the longer hospital stay than first expected but a very Happy Christmas to all.
