History Society at Bodelwyddan

This year's Audlem District History Society visit was last week to Bodelwyddan in North Wales, near St. Asaph.

A large party visited St. Margaret's Church for tea/coffee and a Guided Tour of ‘the Marble Church’ which many will have driven past as it is right next to the A55.

An interesting aspect of the church is a large number of war graves in the cemetery. Some, largely of Canadians, are dated 1919.

Some of their deaths, however, were the result not of injuries sustained in the Great War of 1914 – 18 but following a riot at a nearby transit camp as the Canadians protested about delays in returning to Canada after the war, and the poor food and conditions.

From the church it was then over to Bodelwyddan Castle and Gardens for lunch and an afternoon tour. The imposing Victorian architecture is complemented by a Gallery of paintings from the National Bodelwyddan Castle Portrait Gallery, formal gardens and WW1 trenches system.
