The importance of protecting hedgehogs and what you can do to help them!

1. Found a hedgehog?

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals and tend to come out only when it is dark. They usually hibernate from late October to early April, however during mild winters hedgehogs have been known to hibernate as late as November and December. Should you find a hedgehog out in the daytime this is very unusual and often an indication that something is wrong.

2. What to look for?
In preparation for winter hibernation, hedgehogs need to eat plenty to gain weight and survive the cold weather. Should you find a hedgehog out during the day here are some things to look for: if the hedgehog is foraging for leaves or nest building it is best to leave them be; however a hedgehog out in the daytime may need your help. Hedgehogs asleep in the open may be poorly, it is advised that they be picked up and taken to a rescue as soon as possible.

3. Who to contact?
Should you find a hedgehog in distress the best option is to place them gently into a cat basket or cardboard box (ensure the box has holes to enable the hedgehog to breathe). Fill the box with leaves or shredded newspaper. For extra warmth fill a plastic bottle with warm water.
