Its Runner Bean and French Bean season but things don t always go to plan. Ater early season growing difficulties, first with blackbirds pecking out the growing shoot and then the plague of baby rabbits just leaving a tiny stalk. With the second sowing of bean plants now adequately protected and growing nicely up the canes, lots of deep red or white flowers appear but if the weather is dry and too hot, the bean plants don t like it and the flowers don t set. It is recommended that the plants are regularly misted to help with the pollination, but this is not always possible given the height some bean plants can climb. So we are not having a good season. But thankfully one ADAPT gardener has had success and there will be beans on the market this week. Other salad crops will be available, lettuce, spinach and chard. Last week we had organic new potatoes and some rhubarb, there is a chance of some more this week.
There will be good selection of jams and marmalades, including newly made blackcurrant jam, also the usual free rage eggs and apple juice.
The honey season is in full swing with reports of one local beekeeper taking over 100lb of honey from one hive ( not mine), however my latest batch is dark and runny . Often later season honey is darker and is purely dependant on the nectar sources of the bees.
There will be tea fruit loaf , and Shortbread, cut flowers and a selection of garden flowering plants.
Come along and ask us your gardening questions, we might not always have the answers but most times we do.
We will be at Audlem's Buttermarket, this Saturday ( Today) from 10am till noon.
