A reader has asked AudlemOnline to publicise a petition about the muzzling of greyhounds. We have no particular editorial view about this, but those who feel strongly about it might want to participate.

Just before Christmas last year I witnessed two greyhounds tear our neighbour's cat apart. The dogs were on leads and with their owner but he had no control. Despite my best efforts with a metal rod I couldn't get the dogs off.

I called the police and they did attend but they said that legally there was no action they could take. The most they could do was 'have a word' with the dog owner. The police said that greyhounds are required to be muzzled in public by law only in Northern Ireland!

The internet has many, many instances of greyhounds attacking cats and even small dogs and it seems obvious that the law must be extended to include the rest of the UK.

One of my neighbours has started a petition (link below) for submission to the Government attempting to get the law extended to the rest of the UK. So the more names the better.

I'm not anti greyhound but a lot are ex-working dogs used to chasing small fluffy things and in any case I think it's in their nature anyway so a muzzle's the answer. Some greyhound rescue charities support this view. The Blue Cross pet care charity, amongst others, say that appropriate and properly fitted muzzle cause no discomfort to dogs.
