German Markets talk at WI

Burleydam WI met on Tuesday November 1st for their AGM

The speaker this month was one of our members, Liz Gentil, who told us about the river boat cruise that she and her husband took last December to visit the Christmas Markets in Germany.

This sounds idyllic until you recollect what the weather was like last December – it was cold, very cold, as she kept telling us.  However, on the pictures with which she illustrated her talk, it looked very pretty, with charming villages decked out with stalls, lights, roundabouts and nativity scenes.

Leaving from St Pancras in London they travelled overland by Eurostar to Cologne and then sailed down the Rhine and the Moselle rivers to Frankfurt and back. 

They stopped off at the towns and villages that are strung along the narrow banks of the rivers – the mountains rising steeply behind the buildings.  The trip lasted 6 days and I guess they might have been glad to see their own fireside when they returned.
