The funeral of Peggy Furber will take place at 1.30pm on Friday 30th March at St James' Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Andrew Gunstone. Mrs Furber was a regular worshiper at Audlem Methodist Church but St James is being used as it will be able to accommodate many more people for the service.

Peggy Furber had a long and distinguished career representing the Audlem Ward of the borough council from 1978 to 1998 and served as the Deputy Mayoress in 1988/9. She was elected Crewe & Nantwich mayor in 1992/3 and was awarded the rank of Honorary Alderman in recognition of her long service to the borough council in 1992.

She served on many committees including Amenities; Housing; Policy and Resources; Community Services and Technical Services.

Many tributes have been paid including from Council Leader Cllr. Brian Silvester. He said: "I served for 19 years with Peggy on the borough council. She was an excellent representative of her Audlem Ward constituents. Peggy was a lovely lady who was liked by everyone.. All councillors listened to her with great respect when she spoke."

Audlem Ward Borough Councillor, Rachel Bailey said: "Peggy Furber was a very special person, who when widowed at a young age didn't ask for pity. Instead she went out to see what she could do for others. As she said to me once, 'I have very much enjoyed being a borough councillor because I like people and I like to help them whenever I can.'

Rachel Bailey added: "She was invariably up to speed on the politics of Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council and most definitely as to how Crewe Alex were performing! I feel very fortunate to have known her."

Peggy Furber died on Sunday 18th March, aged 92, and leaves a son, Joe, five grandchildren and nine great-children.
