Audlem came to a halt today for the funeral of Mrs Margaret Smith, described by the Rev. Andrew Gunstone, the Methodist Minister, as a 'village institution'. Margaret Smith was a lifelong Methodist but her service was held at St James' because of the huge number of villagers and friends expected to attend. The church was indeed so packed that a cathedral might have been needed as the village paid tribute. Margaret had lived in the village all her life and had been associated with Audlem Post Office for over fifty years.

Andrew and Jonty Smith, her sons, said they were overwhelmed by the village attendance and were very grateful to everyone.

Audlem Post office was closed for the day.
