A food bank is set to open in Whitchurch to help needy families to provide basic foodstuffs for struggling families in the town and surrounding villages.
It follows the launch of a food bank in Nantwich, run by the Trussell Trust, which has helped more than 600 people in just six months,
Whitchurch organisers want volunteers to help run the new food bank which is scheduled to open on September 27th.
Those behind the scheme say rising food and fuel costs are hitting those on low pay or struggling to find work.
They will hand out food such as tinned meat, pasta, custard, cereals and tea donated to the food bank by local people, shops and supermarkets.
There are training sessions for volunteers run by the Trussell Trust which has helped to launch around 250 food banks across the UK.
Anyone interested in helping can e-mail acscutt@btinternet.com or leave a message on the food bank phone (01948) 663943.
The Nantwich food bank is also calling for more support from local organisations and companies.
The service works on a referral system, with those in need referred by GPs, counsellors and others. Many referrals are because of debts, low incomes, or a delay in benefits.
