Family tribute to cyclist Stewart

The family of cyclist who died in a collision near Nantwich have paid tribute to a "fanily man with traditional values".

Stewart Roy Gandy, 65, from Crewe, died after colliding with a lorry at 1.40pm on Tuesday 12 November 2013, on the A530 Whitchurch Road at Baddington Bridge near Nantwich.

His family said: "Stewart was very much a family man with traditional values and whilst he and his wife, June did not have children of their own, Stewart was a very dear brother to his sister Kerry; and a good mate to his brother in law Ron Fisher and June's brother Robert Storey. "

"A much loved uncle to his niece Emma and to his nephews Jack, Richard and David. He also recently became a great uncle to Amelia Rose and was looking forward to Emma and her fiancé Richard Williams' wedding in July of next year.

"Having recently retired, Stewart and June had planned for how they would make the most of their years ahead of them. They had taken to cruise holidays and were so very much looking forward to the Christmas festivities and New Year Celebrations at sea this December and were saving up for the world cruise they had just booked for in 2015.

"Stewart had recently renewed his acquaintance with an "old friend" his bicycle. For many years, Stewart was a keen and highly proficient cyclist, winning many trophies when during his younger years he took part in competitive cycling as a member of the Crewe Clarion Cycling Club. "

"Recently, he had taken up cycling again to help maintain his fitness but before doing so had ensured that his bicycle was safe to ride by completely stripping it down, renewing important parts, incorporating extra safety features, a skill he had learnt over many years from working in a cycle shop."

"Stewart was renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, organisation skills and moreover, for putting safety first in both his hobbies and in his previous career as an electrical engineer for the sub-station at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Radway Green."

"Stewart set out that fateful day on one of his short cycle rides from his home in Wistaston to Nantwich and then on to the Whitchurch Road with the intention of going via Audlem before returning home to get ready to go out for the evening."

"Here ended the dreams and aspirations of Stewart and his family as his life came to a tragic end leaving only memories and thoughts of what may have been if Stewart's life had not be so cruelly cut short."

A 36-year-old man was arrested in Wigan in connection with the collision and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information, which might assist officers with their enquiries, is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 453 of 12 November.
