There's a beautiful collection of Mola applique, brought back from Panama, on display at Audlem Mill.

These Molas are samples of the complex reverse applique made by the Kuna Indians from the San Blas Island off the coast of Panama.

It is thought that these designs were originally painted on the ladies' bodies, but the missionaries thought it would be better to wear the designs on fabric, not on skin!'

The imagery is drawn from their (the Kuna people, not the missionaries) rich history and culture.'

The ability to create a beautifully stitched Mola is a source of status, as shown by their recognition in the Embroiderers' Guild book of 'Embroidered Treasures -- Birds' and the Royal School of Needlework book of Applique.'
