Dipper in Audlem stream

A resident living at the bottom of Windmill Drive reports seeing a Dipper in the stream at the bottom of his garden on Friday.

He says he has never seen one around here before although they are seen on the other side of Congleton around Wildboarclough.

Dippers are normally found in more upland areas and need clean water which is a good sign for the brook through Audlem. They are the only bird found in Britain that walks under water up the bed of a stream to feed.

This 'spot' will be added to the Wildlife section on Audlem Online – click on the link below the photo – as a Dipper has not been reported for many years, if ever, locally.

(Update). Since the story was published early this morning, the following email has arrived from Roy Plume: "Re the Dipper story, there was a Dipper by the brook at the Willows in late May 2007, sighted also by Bob (lockkeeper) on the canal about then."
