On July 16th the 2nd XI lost to third-place Old Parkonians.  Audlem scored 119 for 9 in their 48 overs, but the Old Boys, with 121 for 7, passed the target to gain 25 points to Audlem’s 8.  This left Audlem still in the relegation zone in eleventh place in Division 4.

Last Saturday, in desperate need of points to escape the relegation dog fight, the 2nd XI entertained second-place Capenhurst 1st X1 and came away with a much-needed win by 5 wickets.

Skipper John Wainwright lost the toss and was invited to field in what looked like perfect batting conditions on a lovely sunny afternoon.  Things soon got worse for Audlem as, in only the seventh over, opening bowler Dave Parry pulled up with a knee injury and had to leave the field for the remainder of the innings. This setback inspired the home team who set about their task with gusto.

Bowlers Broady and Roy Wild were posing the batsmen all kind of problems and soon the wickets began to tumble.  Wild was back to his best bowling a nagging line and length, giving the batsmen little chance to open their shoulders.  At the other end Broady was proving unplayable, using his whole repertoire to tie the bemused batsmen in knots.  Within 33 overs Capenhurst were dismissed for only 129 runs.  A superb master class of bowling by Broady gave him figures of 8 for 59.  Wild finished with 2 for 54.

This was just what Audlem needed, a small total with 53 overs to chase down the runs. After a few early alarms when 4 wickets fell with the score in the 30s and 40s, Audlem rarely looked in trouble with young all-rounder Dan Thorburn dominating proceedings scoring his maiden 50 for the club.  He and Toby Banfield, playing an uncharacteristic patient knock, inched their way to the target.  Banfield was dismissed for 25 before the total was reached, but young Thorburn was determined to see the job through to give his team a well-earned victory with ten overs to spare, finishing on 54 not out.

Audlem gained the maximum 25 points from the game and Capenhurst 9.  The win gave them a great morale boost for the remainder of the season and moved them up three places to eighth.

Tomorrow the 2nd XI travel up to Warrington to take on sixth-place Appleton 3rds, who are only 5 points above them.  In fact, only 8 points separate Appleton from tenth-place Norbury.
