With the Anniversary of the D-Day landings, the media in the past week has been full of stories about the historic and meticulously planned Normandy landings.

With D-Day in mind, have a listen to a fascinating discussion with Commander Henry Curry.

The interview with local resident Henry Curry features probably the most important weather forecast of the previous century in the build-up to D-Day in June 1944. Henry Curry was stationed out in the Atlantic feeding vital weather readings back to Britain while his ship was at great risk from U-boats. Amazingly, he and some colleagues even managed a swim on a nice calm day.

A word of warning, however, if you are afraid of snakes. Henry Curry has two death defying encounters with snakes during his war service (but fortunately not out in the middle of the Atlantic) and his telling of those tales will certainly set your teeth on edge.

It is fascinating, however, to hear this tale, so modestly told by a local man, whose work that week was a matter of life or death for the 800,000 soldiers, sailors and aircrew needing a weather window if the invasion was to get the green light,
