'Contemplation', A Sketch in Tyres – a recycle sculpture

Over the last few months, local artist Lindsey Piper has been the Artist in Residence at Overwater Marina creating sculptures using recycled bicycle tyres.

The focus of her work has been to create a piece called 'Contemplation' depicting a seated young girl lost in her imagination reading a Kindle.

A variety of people in Audlem have assisted with helping this sculpture come to its fruition. The materials were provided by Nikki and Tim Ball of Audlem Cyclesport with their technician, Geoff Chaplin saving damaged inner tubes and tyres for Lindsey's artwork.

The model for the sculpture is based on local Girl Scout, Meghan Brookes of 22nd South West Cheshire 1st Audlem, and the doors of the Audlem Methodist Church were opened for a photoshoot by June Perry.

Lindsey said, "I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this project in particular the manager at Overwater Marina, Janet Maughan for letting me have my Residency with them. I've really enjoyed the ambiance at the marina.

"The lovely welcome of the staff has made my Residency a real pleasure not forgetting the banter from Vern and the lovely cups of tea and cake served by the Coffee Shop staff. This has helped my creative process and it has been great getting feedback from the customers as I've been making the sculptures."

In response Janet said, "We have been delighted to have an Artist in Residence in particular one who uses recycled materials and I hope Lindsey Piper comes back next winter."

Sam Jamhour, a Marina Supervisor at Overwater Marina when asked what it was like to have an Artist in Residence said, "It's been fascinating watching how Lindsey works using recycled materials to create her sculptures."

As a thank you to Overwater Marina, Lindsey Piper has created another Sketch in Tyres as a legacy sculpture to be left with them. It will be presented at the RNLI Festival at the marina on Sunday 31st May.

If you would like a sneak preview the sculpture will be appearing in the window of Audlem Cyclesport throughout Audlem festival from 21st – 25th May.
