On Friday, 24th November, the Crewe and Nantwich Member of Parliament, Laura Smith returned to Brine Leas School in Nantwich; 16 years ago she had been a student at the school, now she attended in her official capacity to publically open the newly refurbished suite of Food Technology rooms.

The improved amenities are a result of a significant investment from The Savoy Educational Trust and the school's own charity, The Brine Leas Trust, made to improve and increase the curriculum offered both to Brine Leas students and to the local community.

Laura, accompanied by the Head, Andrew Cliffe, inspected the new facilities and spoke to a year 11 group while they prepared a selection of individual quiches. She commentated on their skill and confidence – and the quality of the finished products.

Jade Downes, Food Technology tutor, said: 'It has been a great experience – liaising with the fitters to maximise the number of work stations while improving the layout and, at the same time, ensuring that the features are bright and modern in order to encourage not only our students, but also Primary students, who visit on Activity Days, and members of the local community that attend our Evening Classes. With the extra resources, we have been able to extend the Food Curriculum and from September 2018 we will be able to offer an 'A' level course in Food and Nutrition in addition to our G.C.S.E. work.'

Andrew Cliffe, Head Teacher, further commented: 'The extra resources mean that all Years 10 and 11, together with our BL6 students, are able to complete a short course in 'Healthy student cooking' as part of the enriched curriculum programme.'

Later, Laura found time to speak to politics students from BL6, the Brine Leas sixth form.
