Chronicle features A525 issue with photo

This week's Chronicle carries an extensive report of the bid to have the A525 reduced from a Primary Route to an ordinary A-road as a first step in reducing the numbers of HGVs passing through Audlem. The report features Parish Councillor Bill Consterdine and Stafford Street resident Ann Tilling. They are photographed measuring the width of the road past the church. It came to just 3.84 metres.

Bill Consterdine says in the report: "It is only by the grace of God there hasn't been a fatality. Near misses in the village centre are regular with big lorries trying to squeeze past each other. A lamp post was knocked down, replaced and knocked down again within a day and it's all because there's no room for lorries to get through."

Ann Tilling added: "Sometimes lorries mount the pavement at speed and one man had to leap into the Post Office garden to avoid being struck. We just want the road changed to an ordinary A-road, which is marked red on road maps, rather than a primary A-road, which is marked in green. (The website link that was here no longer works)

The report also covers the worst accident to date when two vehicles hit head-on eight years ago and a truck exploded near the village centre – pictured here. Just metres away from houses, the fire was so severe it caused the road to sink 15cm.
