Cheshire East Council opened its doors to 55 young people last month as part of the Children's Commissioner's (Dr Maggie Atkinson) Takeover Day 2012.

Cheshire East youth support service organised young people, aged 13-19, to work on a wide-range of council services, shadowing directors, senior managers and councillors.

Partner organisations also got involved and let teenagers get involved in the day-to-day running of their business. These included schools, children's centres, the fire service, Forum Housing, Dane Housing Plus and Red Shift Radio.

Children benefit from experiencing the world of work and making their voices heard, while staff and the organisations gain a fresh perspective.

It is hoped that this will help break down barriers between generations and encourage young people to become more active in their local communities.

Audlem's Councillor, Rachel Bailey, Cabinet member in charge of children and families, said: "Cheshire East Council is very proud to be involved in this event. It gives young people the chance to see first hand how key decisions are made. It also encourages them to give their views.

"Cheshire East Council is planning to be involved in Takeover Day next year, when we hope to include even more young people.

"I would like to thank all colleagues and partners for giving young people such amazing opportunities."

There is an awards evening planned to recognise the young people's success in January 2013.
