Ralph Warburton of ADAS (Audlem District Amenities Society) writes to say: "On Friday 18th May I will be giving all the children at St James' Primary School three young onion plants each to grow on through the summer. This is part of the annual ADAS activity whereby we include the children in growing a plant and being part of the vibrant community life of the district."

"In the past we have had sweet corn, marrows, sun flowers etc and the children – all the way from nursery to year 6 – enjoy the challenge it presents. And then the satisfaction when they bring their harvest to school in the Autumn term to be judged by myself and other ADAS committee members."

"It is a grand sight to see around 230 eager faces as I tell them how to nurture their plant through the growing season. The plants should be great fun and produce a really big show of onions for them. It's a good way to involve the children in nature, for many will have never seen an onion in this way – as opposed to being on the shelf in a store!"
