Firefighters welcomed by Road Safety GB
Cheshire has become one of only two fire and rescue services in the country to become a member of Road Safety GB (RSGB).
The endorsement from the national road safety organisation comes after more than 10 years of the Service delivering road safety education to a wide range of people in schools, colleges, places of employment and at community events. Representing such groups as local authority road safety teams, RSGB aims to reduce the number and severity of road collisions, reducing loss of life and personal injury by raising awareness of road safety and safer behaviour across all road user groups.
As part of their role, firefighters are frequently required to attend road traffic collisions, some of which have devastating consequences for those involved. This role, as both responders and educators, places the Service in a unique position and adds considerably to the service provided.
Preventing the number of people killed or seriously injured on Cheshire's roads is a key part of the Service's community protection role and membership means that it is now recognised and commissioned to deliver verified RSGB education on behalf of local authorities.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service's Road Safety Manager Colin Heyes said:
"We are pleased that RSGB has recognised that we are providing a credible and professional service delivering road safety education and engagement. We deliver this both as a stand alone service and in partnership with other agencies such as the police, local authorities and Highways England."
"Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is commissioned to deliver road safety education in all Cheshire East schools and we are very proud of the fact that we are the first European fire and rescue service to be awarded such a contract."
