Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is awarded for life saving partnership with ProTyre

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service won two prestigious awards at the TyreSafe Awards 2016 for their partnership with tyre specialists, Protyre.
Organised by the charity TyreSafe, the awards recognise excellence in promoting and raising the profile of tyre specialists and tyre safety to motorists.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, in partnership with Pro Tyre, won the Outstanding Achievement Award and the Emergency Services Award for their excellent preventative work during the winter months in highlighting the dangers of defective vehicles and tyres to motorists.

Colin Heyes from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We're really proud to receive this award. I'm absolutely confident that the work we have done with Protyre has saved lives, because the more tyres we check and the more we educate motorists, the less chance there is for crashes as a result of dangerous or illegal tyres."

In the past year alone, Protyre and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service have organised a variety of initiatives, including supermarket roadshows, PR and advertising activities, as well as social media campaigns.

Particularly successful is the partnership work with Tyresafe members to promote driving safely during the winter months. Their work includes performing practical vehicle checks, and giving vital winter driving advice, at various events in October. Last year, the partnership performed a total of 780 physical checks of vehicles, flagging many badly worn and dangerous tyres, in addition to other vehicle defects. The organisations also teach motorists how to perform these simple vehicle checks themselves in order to keep themselves and other road users safe.
TyreSafe's Christine Joyce said: "Protyre and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service go out of their way to commit time and resources to the tyre safety awareness campaign and have been doing so throughout TyreSafe's 10 years. What particularly stood out for the judges was the commitment of both to reach out to form partnerships and further facilitate the tyre safety awareness over a long period of time."

A spokesperson for Protyre in Cheshire said: "This is an amazing achievement and a great example of how working in partnership makes a real difference to road safety.
"But we won't be resting on our laurels. There's a lot more work to do and we're looking forward to continuing our successful partnership with the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service."

According to TyreSafe, 968 motorists were killed in 2013 in accidents where illegal, defective or under inflated tyres were a contributory factor, whilst over 80,000 tyre related incidents are reported on Highway England's roads every year. Shockingly, results from this survey showed that 1 in 4 vehicles could have illegal, unsafe tyres. Through making drivers well aware of these risks, and demonstrating safe practise the partnership aims to reduce the high level of these types of accidents.
