On Thursday evening Audlem Parish Councillors attended the annual awards ceremony run by Cheshire Community Action in the magnificent setting of Sandwich Town Hall.

The hall was full and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the guest speaker, Professor Tim O'Brien, telling us about seventy years of Jodrell Bank's history.

But the main purpose of the gathering was to present the awards. Once again Audlem made it to the final judging stage in the Best Kept Village class (1001 to 2,500 population). But we were unlucky this year, with Willaston taking the top prize.

Our only other local winner was Hankelow who finished runner-up to Hatton in the category of small villages with a population of up to four hundred.

However, we did win something. We won a 'Little Gem' award for the funeral bier which now resides at the entrance to the cemetery.

All in all it was an entertaining evening. But we must aim to do better next year so that we can win more awards as we have in the past!

AudlemOnline adds: After winning the Community Website of the Year award a good number of times in recent years, the webteam decided to take a break in 2016 and did not put in a submission to Cheshire Community Action. We will, however, be working hard over the coming months to make our 2017 entry a potential winner again.
