Burleydam and District Women's Institute report: "One of the advantages of being situated where we are in South Cheshire is that the WI can enjoy listening to speakers from across the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Wales as well as those from Cheshire. May's speaker was Sue Bradley, well known in Shropshire as a WI activist ( currently a Vice Chairman of the Shropshire Federation of WI's) and an accomplished cook."

"Sue demonstrated a range of recipes suitable for a summer supper from courgette and cheese tart to cranberry parfait. She also judged the competition for a flapjack which was won by Gladys Burrows with Patricia Coupe second and Helen Stevenson third. Some of the lucky raffle winners had the opportunity of taking home one of the dishes Sue had cooked."

"Next month, at the NFWI's Annual General Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in London, there will be one Resolution for debate, urging "HM Government to stop the closure of community hospitals, which provide essential services to local people" This was discussed by Burleydam WI members and approved by a large majority."

"Unfortunately the date of this meeting clashed with the "Great Milk Debate" which took place the same evening in Whitley Village Hall. Organised by Whitley WI this was one of a series of meetings being held across the country in support of the WI's campaign for fairer milk prices for dairy farmers. The importance of dairying to Cheshire's economy and landscape was emphasised. The "No Cows No Countryside" slogan used by Country Life magazine in their campaign seemed very appropriate when driving to the debate along the A49 with birds singing, blossom in the hedgerows and a large sign advertising a dairy herd for sale displayed prominently in a field!

Let's hope it is not too late to reverse the trend."
