Campaigners for Buerton Primary School are angrily questioning Cheshire County Council's decision to close the school while allowing the 'virtually identical' Worleston School to stay open for community use after that school was given an eleventh hour reprieve from closure.

Education officers have said that the decisions differed because Worleston School building was owned by Church of England trustees while Buerton is council owned. The question, however, of what the council plans to do with the Buerton building remains unanswered. Campaigners are to ask for reassurance that the building will be kept open for community use. A spokesman for Buerton parents said: "In practice, once Buerton School is closed the council could knock the building down and build houses, leaving local groups with no meeting place. They are fragmenting the community – the school gives the residents a focal point but without it they may not be strong enough to fight for the building. It is heartbreaking."
