The Beast of Stafford Street

Yesterday I was rescuing a dragonfly from my kitchen.

Today I found this guy wandering merrily down the pavement on Stafford Street. He's now safe and happily munching on a fuchsia in my neighbours garden.

This fearsome looking beastie was spotted by my eagle eyed neighbour on the pavement in Stafford Street, and moving at speed towards the road. Possibly a refugee of someone's recycling bin. It has been rehomed in a fuchsia plant in the back garden.

It is the caterpillar of the Elephant Hawk moth, so called because the caterpillar resembles an elephant's trunk. Fuchsia and Willowherb are among it's favoured feeding plants. It will overwinter as a Chrysalid in the low foliage or in the soil
