A new book just published by CanalBookShop at Audlem Mill contains several photos of the canal at Audlem around 50 years ago, with laden working narrow boats going through the locks. There have been many changes in the intervening years – these days, far more trees and bushes line the canal, changing the scenes considerably.

"The Twilight Years of Narrow Boat Carrying" contains more than 150 photos by Mike Webb of the last years of commercial carrying on the canal system. Many of the photos were taken at various locations on the Shropshire Union Canal which runs through Audlem, with others in the Midlands and the Middlewich to Northwich area.

Mike Webb was brought up close to the canal at Brewood, about 25 miles south of Audlem, and took a very large number of photos recording the last of the working boats. He died a few years ago, and this new book is a final record of his work. The book is available at Audlem Mill, or from www.canalbookshop.co.uk
