Audlem resident Geoff Farr of Whitchurch Road, Audlem has the lead letter published in this week's Nantwich Chronicle. He has asked if Audlem Online could also publish his letter. He says:

On the front page of the Nantwich edition (July 8) about the Sainsbury store planning application, I read with contempt and disgust the comments of various councillors and officials.

All their opinions are powered by their greed. They have grown so used, the councillors, to their expenses and the council staff to their salaries and pensions, that they cannot see their own mistakes or make moves to correct them.

This applies equally to Crewe and Nantwich which I now visit seldom, and, if I must, I travel on my motorcycle which costs nothing to park.

For my journey I am charged by the Government's ridiculous taxes upon the fuel I use and, by the council, additional tax to visit the shops – it is called a parking charge.

Is it any wonder that I limit myself to infrequent visits and even those visits are usually to the council's own offices.

Why should I pay extra to visit the Snowhill project if I can obtain what I need from a free car park at Sainsbury's? Does Cllr Arthur Moran realise that shoppers have abandoned the town centre shops and would do even more so if certain stores abandoned their limited free parking.

Why should I be happy if the application were to be turned down? I would not.

The 'Shop in Nantwich' campaign will be a complete waste of effort as long as the greedy council continues its present policy. John Dunning at the Chamber of Trade is batting his head against a wall in support of independent traders as long as 'Your Council' is working so hard to kill the town centre.

Morrisons, Aldi and Sainsbury's can afford for their customers to park free. Why cannot the town collectively, through its council, do the same? A one-word answer – greed.

Why are these people so blinkered that they cannot see the obvious?

Sainsbury's can see the attraction of what they offer and are prepared to put their money where their mouth is. Why cannot the people who have the power to right this wrong do something about it to the advantage of both the towns and the countryside surrounding them?

The councils have become the modern equivalent of the Robber Barons of the Middle Ages and until their powers to take our money are curbed they will continue to kill our country towns.
