The Libyan challenge is a 136 mile (215km) run across one of the world's greatest desert wildernesses. Runners are self supporting and will self-navigate the whole route. The time limit to complete this grueling event is 75 hours.

Joel Whittaker (of Audlem Tree Care) is taking part in this event and aims to raise as much money and awareness as possible for the UK charity, Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). You can donate by clicking on the link below the photo.

Joel says: "The 2011 edition promises to be a fantastic event and plans are underway for the first-ever night start illuminated by Bengal lights. This should certainly add some spice to the race as we start the long climb over the 1,040 metre-high Awiz Pass and descend into the Akakus with just a head torch and a GPS for guidance. It should make for some interesting physical and psychological effects as you start off on the 215 kilometre course!"

Joel adds: "The Libyan Challenge, a 136 mile run over the Libyan Sahara and slightly different to the canal paths and public footpaths I often use in and around Audlem, south Cheshire.

"The Libyan challenge appealed to me due to all runners having to carry their own equipment and being required to navigate across the desert, even with a wrist mounted GPS not an easy task.

"I have completed many endurance events over the years and always get a great feeling of satisfaction having not only completed the challenge but also raising awareness and funds for worthwhile causes. The level of training required for many of these events is also an excellent way to stay on top of my fitness year round, whatever the weather.

"I'm well into training for this latest event and feel confident I'll achieve the distance within the allotted 75 hours. Running across desert dunes is a new one for me and should prove interesting!

"I chose fundraising for the CPRE as they are committed to protecting and enhancing our country side. Having worked abroad for many years I really appreciate England's natural beauty, I hope that by competing in the Libyan Challenge I can help raise awareness of the CPRE and all the good work they do and contribute fund raising as a result".

Campaign to Protect Rural EnglandThis organization is now into its 80th year, is presided over by the much loved author Bill Bryson and aims to protect and enhance the British countryside.

The CPRE not only campaigns for the enhancement and protection of our beautiful countryside but also on behalf of the rural community. Audlem has its own advocate of the CPRE in Greville Watts who has also established the Audlem Wildlife & Ecology groups in recent months.
