A reminder that Audlem Lass will be sailing today, May Bank Holiday. It's the ideal way to enjoy a trip on the canal, visit the Overwater Marina and help the RNLI, the Lifeboat charity.
The Audlem Lass team has produced its May Newsletter, entitled 'Rond Hook'. It says:
Following on from the recent very successful Crew Familiarisation weekend, we carried out our first rescue over the Easter weekend, when we rescued Teddy who had fallen in the water from a passing narrowboat.
Rosie, her owner, was delighted to have her Teddy safely returned to her by Ken and Graham who were in charge that day, and showed her relief by enthusiastically wagging her tail!
We welcomed another crew member this month, to accompany Alf Allweather, Frances Fairweather (known as Fran) has joined the Marketing Team. Passenger numbers for April came to 329 adults, 84 children and 30 dogs – slightly less than last year.
We had some good publicity during the month: Joe had a session on Redshift Radio, Bob Cartwright of AudlemOnline was on Radio Stoke and talked enthusiastically about Audlem Lass Boat Service, and the facilities at Overwater Marina including the Wheelyboat. Thanks to Bob, we also had a brilliant write-up in the Whitchurch and Market Drayton 'Gossip' magazines.
Our Facebook numbers are increasing nicely: we now have 850 followers, with 478 on Twitter, 240 on Instagram and we have had 10 'excellent/very good' reviews on Tripadviser – all very positive.
The placement of Audlem Lass Leaflets outside of our immediate area is already bringing rewards: Five couples visiting from London staying at Alvaston Hall saw our leaflet, drove to Overwater Marine, parked and took a trip on Audlem Lass to spend time in the village, and returned later that day to collect their car. They were very positive about our area and the service we offer.
Graham has supplied some interesting nautical terms and each month it is planned to include one in the Rond Hook. If you have any amusing 'sayings' relevant to boats/water please pass them on.
Union Jack: No such thing! Sailors looked upon their flag as they would any other ship mate, i.e. Jack. The term 'Jack' is used only when the flag is worn forward on H.M. Ships. The Union Flag is one thing; the Jack is another. ..they just happen to be the same.
