Audlem in the TV limelight

A break in the awful weather today proved timely for the live broadcast of BBC TV's North West Tonight as a large and lively crowd of Audlem residents turned out in the Square under the Buttermarket. Broadcaster Stuart Flinders chatted to locals Christine Cottrell and Suzanne Baxter about what makes the village so special.

The broadcast conversation focussed on whether Audlem was a typically prosperous Cheshire village and the cost of housing. Christine said this was very much a farming community while, confronted with the issue of affordable housing, Suzanne pointed out that she was was brought up in the area, left for a few years but was able to return and loves the village. Many other residents were filmed, including a couple of youngsters who had dressed up for the occasion.

The very professionally delivered weather forecast for the region completed the broadcast, which was part of a series from around the borders of the North West region. Stuart Flinders said he had been forced to include Audlem in the series by a flood of local emails asking that the village, the most southerly village in the North West, be featured.

The camera covered the Church of St James, the Lord Combermere pub and village shops. It was pointed out that the village had three pubs and, despite the gloomy weather that seems to have followed the BBC crew around over the past week, the village centre looked splendid as the villagers waved to the cameras to end the programme.
